Betting apps – applications – are being touted as the punters’ dream, allowing them to access the odds while on the move, and even place a bet. Racegoers, for example, can back a horse without leaving the parade ring. Apps appeal to users because once they’ve downloaded them to their smartphone or tablet computer, they have the odds at their fingertips. Most download several companies’ apps to compare prices – and can use the same device to place a bet. The big bookmakers are crediting their mobile apps with boosting profits; William Hill’s mobile turnover reached almost £11m in a single week earlier this year after their app was launched in the Apple App store. But where does that leave the High Street betting shop? Are apps a “friend” to attract new customers or a “foe” keeping the betting public from the door? Even worse, are they helping them “beat the book”? You could argue that using apps is no different to online betting – a phenomenon which retail bookmakers have already...
