Ron Hearn of JenningsBet crowned 2017 BSMOTY winner

Ron Hearn has been named as the winner of the 2017 SIS/Racing Post Betting Shop Manager of the Year.

The 57-year-old regional champion for Greater London takes the crown from last year’s victor Robert Mabbett of Betfred following one of the closest contests of recent years.

Hearn’s victory was the first for JenningsBet in 30 years of the competition. The final eight shop managers, representing Ladbrokes, Coral, JenningsBet, Paddy Power Betfair, Megabet and William Hill, all attended the awards ceremony at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, London yesterday, after the final judging had concluded.

Ron said: “It is nice for an independent to win it and also for a little bit of recognition. After 40 years, I can now say every day was worth it.”

Ron Hearn was recognised for his career in betting shops spanning 40 years.  The 57-year-old has been with JenningsBet for the last six years, having started his career with William Hill a few days after leaving school in 1977. Having worked in his shop in Charlton for 21 years, he has made the shop a key part of the local community and has a very loyal customer base.

Ron said: “”In an ideal world, with each customer who comes in the door you have got to make them think they are the person you have opened the door for.”

Paul Witten, Product Director at SIS, said: “Ron is a well-deserving winner of this year’s Betting Shop Manager of the Year after what has been one of the most competitive judging processes I’ve experienced.”

Ron will now embark on a a very exciting and busy year ahead,  with various public appearances lined up at sporting events and award shows across the country, as well as being flown out to Singapore for a key race day later in the year.
