There is one day each year when bookmakers welcome people they have never seen before – and might not see again for 12 months. Grand National day – this year it is on April 14 – is by far the busiest day in the calendar for LBOs, a day when their regular clientele will be joined in the queues at the tills by strangers placing bets not only for themselves but also for their mums, dads, aunties, uncles and even their dogs on who will win or be placed in “The Grand National” . The day is etched in the nation’s psyche. Offices and factories will run sweepstakes, there will be debates about who will win and why in the media, and come the day people will gather around television sets in betting shops, in pubs, in their home and even in electrical shops. In fact anywhere were they can watch and wait for the famous ....”And they’re off!” Like in the previous 160 runnings of the world’s most famous steeplechase, the winner’s name will earn a special place in the memories of those who backed...
