Happy daze as Barbara starts reign as Queen of Shops

We catch up with BARBARA BERKI after she was crowned the retail betting industry's new champion. Casual punters wandering into William Hill’s on Marsh Road in Luton this week would have received a cheery welcome from the manager behind the counter. They’ll have enjoyed a cuppa and a couple of biscuits while they weighed up the odds. Only once they approached the counter would they have noticed something different – the gleaming silver trophy presented days earlier to manager Barbara Berki as SIS/Racing Post Betting Shop Manager of the Year. Back at her post after a whirlwind 48 hours last Sunday and Monday which saw her triumph in the sumptuous surroundings of the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, London, Berki confesses it all still feels unreal. “I wasn’t expecting to win and I still can’t believe it,” she says. “I was shocked then and I think I’m still in shock now.” Fellow bookmakers gathered at the final’s Champagne reception may have been divided in their loyalties – but all seemed...
